Trust and communication between emergency planners and public is dependent on proper communication

Slándáil at SWDM’15: Trust, Social Media and Emergency Management

The Slándáil project presented a paper at the 3rd International Workshop on Social Web for Disaster Management (SWDM ’15), co-located with the 24th International World Wide Web Conference (WWW 2015), on 18 May 2015 in Florence, Italy. The title of the paper was ‘Trust-Building through Social Media Communications in Disaster Management’ authored by Maria Grazia Busà, Maria Teresa Musacchio (University of Padua), Shane Finan (Trinity College Dublin), Cilian Fennel (Stillwater Communications). The paper was presented by PM. Grazia Busà.

Prof. Busà introduced the Slandail Project to the audience, and presented the work the Slandail team is carrying out on Trust as a key element for effective communication with social media in emergency response following disasters. She discussed 3 case studies of communication with social media in disaster management, focusing on how trust with the public should be construed and nurtured in written texts (through an appropriate use of words, discourse structure, etc.) and oral texts or videos (through speakers’ appropriate use of intonation, body stance, gaze, hand gestures, etc.). The case studies showed that trust plays a central role in decision-making processes, as people in emergency are more likely to do what suggested by someone they trust.

The aim of the workshop was to provide a venue for research on disaster management as it relates to the real-time social web. The program of the workshop can be found here.
